Following his wife’s death, St. Francis Borgia entered the Jesuits but remained in the world for a few years to provide for his children and settle his civic affairs. Renowned for his holiness, St. Francis became the third general of the Jesuit Order and expanded the Society to India and the Americas. He also helped in the establishment of what is now the Gregorian University in Rome and founded a dozen Catholic colleges in Spain. Although he served as the political and spiritual adviser to the emperor, amid numerous other tasks, he sought first and foremost intimacy with God.
